Start your New Year Purging Old Stuff- Decluttering Tips and Tricks

With 2023 in full swing, maintaining a clean and organized home is essential—cabinets filled with mismatched Tupperware and closets filled with clothes that haven’t fit in four years. We all struggle to give away things because even if it has the smallest memory, we  believe they can take up space in our homes. Then we end up with hundreds of birthday cards, old papers that were shoved in the junk drawer, or a random t-shirt from many years ago.

Letting things go can be difficult, so here are some creative and easy ways to declutter and organize your home for the new year.

  • Fill an entire trash bag: Starting with decluttering one space at a time is the easiest and quickest way to declutter. Using one trash bag, start in one cabinet or closet and fill the trash bag with unwanted items. If you are being indecisive about something, chances are you won’t think about it in the future.
  • Give one item away each day: Simply finding one item a day would get you 365 items that will get removed from your home each year. If you want a real challenge, try getting rid of two things a day, whether it is adding them to the trash bag of items to donate or throwing it away, your home will thank you.
  • View your home as a first-time visitor. It’s easy to “forget” what your home looks like to a new visitor. Enter your home as if you’re visiting the home of a friend. Write down your first impression of how clean and organized the home is and make changes.
  • Donate clothes you never wear: Sounds simple enough right? We all struggle to get rid of clothes. If an item of clothing doesn’t fit, it’s okay to get rid of it! Keeping clothes around hoping that one day they will fit again is only going to continue to stress you out.

There are so many other ways to declutter and organize your home but start small. Cleaning one cabinet is better than none. The sooner your closet is decluttered means a shopping spree, right? There is a beautiful world of freedom and fresh air hiding behind that clutter. Deciding how to declutter your home is up to you but try something new in 2023 and make it happen
